Refurbishing - Painting - the fun begins.....
With a few parts to work with and the Air Brush setup is ready to go we can begin to play around a bit with applying a bit of paint to the parts to see what adjustments need to be made to get good coverage without a lot of over spray. This is the beauty of an Air Brush as you can use it anywhere without making a mess. Today I am out on the balcony as it is a super end-of-summer day and with bright sunlight I have lots of light to get a close look at the proceedings.
For this exercise I used Humbrol Green No.2 Enamel paint in a 14 ml. tin just to try out the setup. The paint was reduced - 2 parts Paint to 1 part Thinner.
My first batch was sprayed in two layers, first one edge and top then the other edge and top. All ends were done next. You can watch the paint build up making sure you do not over-do it. These were rather heavy coats. As the paint was drying you could see raised rings around the bolt holes. These were pretty much flattened out the next morning when I inspected the parts.
The second batch was done in four layers with a 15 minute drying time between coats. This produced a much smoother finish but not as glossy as the first batch with heavier coats. (perhaps another layer was needed).

These parts just came out of the oven and are cooling off. They were baked @ 220 degrees for 20 minutes. (didn't know I was handy in the kitchen huh!) In case you are wondering these are AC Gilbert parts. Narrow strips with 1/4" hole spacing. 10-1/2" and 3" shown. No attempt was made to clean them up as this was only a test. |
