Refurbishing Parts - Intro
Having stripped and repainted several thousand Meccano parts over the years, I decided to have another go at trying to strip zinc parts. You know, those common strips that have a tendency to develop black spots or just go dull sitting in your storage box.
In the past I used a product called Poly Stripper which came in gel form and did a wonderful job of removing paint but did nothing to zinc. Thanks to the friendly environmentalists this product is no longer available in Canada as it is 'too dangerous' for public use. (still obtainable in the US though) Actually, Wal-Mart (in Canada) does have some interesting products that might do the job, but I have not tried any of them yet.
There are a few paint remover products around that can do a lot of damage to your body if not carefully used but unless you have ideal conditions and a well ventilated shop it would be best to stay clear of these.
To get away from chemical stripping, I next looked at other solutions.
